Make Your Own Organic Tortillas!

Organic tortillas in my neck of the woods run around $4.00 a pack when they are not on sale and you don't have a coupon - gasp! That's not always feasable when you are on a budget, so why not make them yourself?

Here is a great recipe the Fairie Mom passed along:

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 5 T. butter
  • 1 cup hot tap water
  • 1 t. salt
  • flour for rolling out the tortillas

Here are the brands I suggest to make this organic:

1. Cut the butter into the flour with a pastry blender until the butter is distributed
evenly.

2. Dissolve the salt in the hot water.

3. Pour the salted water into the flour mixture. Stir until all combined.

4. Divide dough into 12 equal balls.

5. Sprinkle flour onto a clean counter surface.

6. Use a rolling pin to roll each ball of dough flat until it is about 6 inches around.

7. Heat a skillet (cast iron works best) on high, then reduce heat to medium.

8. Place rolled out dough into skillet. Allow to cook until a few bubbles begin to
form. Use a spatula to turn the tortilla over. Allow the other side to cook until a
few bubbles form. Each side will take about one minute to cook.

9. Stack the completed tortillas on a plate and continue to cook remaining dough
one at a time until finished.

I am hoping to try this very soon! If you try it, send me an e-mail of your pictures and what you think!

Thanks again Fairie Mom!
